Tart and Uplifting – Lemon Essential Oil

I recently featured the recipe for my Lemon Poppy Seed Soap. You’ll notice one thing missing – lemon essential oil! I had all of my base oils out and went to where I keep my essential oils and was mortified to see that my lemon essential oil had faded away. (sigh)

I ended up using some alternative “lemony” essential oils for the batch – but it’s really good with real lemon. Lemon essential oil is bright, uplifting, tart and purifying. We use lemons in our food and cleaning products, tonics and medicines, beverages and desserts – and it’s just as good in soap and candles.

Lemon Poppy Seed Soap Recipe

Poppy seeds are one of my favorite natural exfoliants in soap recipes. They’re scrubby enough, but not too scrubby or “scratchy”. I wanted to make a batch of “lemon poppy seed soap” but wanted to experiment with some lemon-ish essential oils – that smell sort of like lemon or citrus, but aren’t lemon or orange. This recipe, which uses three different essential oils – cedarwood, bergamot and niaouli – is indeed bright and citrusy, but it’s also crisp, a little bit woodsy, floral and green as well. I love it!

Did You Make a Mess with Your Candle Making?

They say a messy desk is a sign of a creative mind – but a messy kitchen, or where ever it is you make your candles, is just that…messy. I find that if I keep everything clean and organized, I make fewer errors, waste less ingredients, make better products, and use the supplies and materials that I have more efficiently. So here are some resources to help you clean as you go…and stay organized!

Almost Throwing Out Fifty Things

I spent part of my spring break vacation in the garage – rearranging, organizing, and purging.

I had some inspiration from Gail Blanke’s book “Throw Out Fifty Things” and was working on getting rid of some stuff…but if there’s one thing that candle and soap makers are…it’s thrifty. I mean…that old batch of soap could be rebatched…or those old candle and wax scraps could be recycled. But I did part with a few things…some broken molds, some old oils and colors that would never be used, some faded essential oils. But I was really stuck in the “I may use that some day” syndrome. Oh well…I did make progress…and cleared the way for some fun new stuff!

Start Smart – Start “Good”

Most of us don’t think “I’m going to start my own business” when we first get started making candles or soap – but once you’re hooked, it’s often just a matter of time before you do. If there’s one bit of advice I can give to anyone even thinking about starting their own candle or soap making business, it’s start it right. Lay the foundation solidly with good manufacturing practices, good record keeping, and good documentation of all of your products and processes. Marie Gale has a marvelous book that details how to do this – Good Manufacturing Practices for Soap & Cosmetic Handcrafters. While focused on soap and cosmetic making, the processes easily translate into candle making as well.

Soap Making Books for Kids

We’re just about to start spring break here in my city…and parents are working on just what the kids will do during the week. Well, if you’re going to be home for the week, how about a fun craft day with the kids. I’ve let my son help with the “grown up” soap making…but he enjoys it more when I let him pick the soap project that we do. Some of his favorites are in this collection of Soap Making Books for Kids. Beware – they’re fun projects for grownups too!

Make Homemade Laundry Soap

laundry soap setupSoap makers are a pretty frugal and generally environmentally friendly lot of folks – and once they’ve changed the soap they use in their showers, often examine their whole households. Making your own homemade laundry soap is super easy and much cheaper than commercial laundry detergent! And more…you know exactly the ingredients are in it! A lot of people resist making the transition to homemade laundry soap – but once they do, never regret it.

Three Milks Make One Great Soap Recipe

You have likely tried making soap with goat’s milk, coconut milk or even cow’s milk. But have you ever used all three? That’s what I wanted to try when I developed this recipe using three different milks inspired by the yummy tres leches cake. I used my colleague Amanda Griffin’s “milk in oil method” for adding milk to the soap recipe – and it works splendidly.
