Cocoa Butter Massage Bars

Cocoa Butter Massage BarsI know it seems that Christmas is barely over…and to look at a Valentine’s soap mold is crazy. But Valentine’s Day is just over a month away.
It’s also the season for dry skin…so what a better combination than these? They’re a little bit lotion, a little bit massage oil – closely related to the candle – but in a class all by their self…the massage bar. With ingredients you probably already have on your shelf if you’re a candle and soap maker, you can make these decadently easy massage bars. And though technically not a candle or a soap – it’s so closely related that I’ve created a whole new category on the site — Bath & Body — that has information on Bath Fizzies, Bath Salts and more.

Double Butter Luxury Soap Recipe

double butter soapIt’s just a month away from Christmas, so I’ve been busy making soap to be ready for Christmas gifts. I’ve really been in love with my recent batch of 100% coconut oil soap, but I wanted to make a batch of soap that would be – and would be perceived as – real “luxury” soap. Many people equate “luxury” with oils like shea butter and cocoa butter, so I created this recipe, called Double Butter, that uses 25% butters in the recipe. It’s otherwise a pretty straightforward recipe. I did this batch with an “in the pot” swirl. It is certain to delight your friends and family – but be sure to save a bar for yourself!

Making Soap with Cow’s Milk Butter

I am always one for a soap making adventure!

I recently got to read through The Natural Soapmaking Handbook and the companion recipe book, “The Natural Soapmaking Cookbook.” One of the oils that they mention and feature in several recipes is butterfat from cow’s milk. Yep…the stuff you have in your refrigerator. I had always heard that butter in soap smelled really bad – like bad parmesan cheese or vomit. (It’s due to the butyric acid in them.) But I decided to try it anyway! The jury is still out on the smell – it may just be my imagination – or it may really have a slight icky smell. I’ll report back after it’s had some more time to cure.

Make Your Own Body Butter

The weather turned really cold this week…and it was the first time in months where my skin felt at all dry. One way to treat your skin really well is body butter. Whether you make it with just shea butter, or with a combination of shea butter and cocoa butter, it’s wonderful…and SO easy to make. I have a how-to video in the Candle and Soap Making video library. This one shows you how to make Whipped Body Butter. If you’re making soap, you’ve probably already got these ingredients on hand…or know where to get them. It’s a wonderful way to super-moisturize your skin – and makes a great gift!

All About Shea Butter

Before I started making soap, I knew about lard and olive oil. I knew about lavender essential oil and cocoa butter. But I had never heard about shea butter. This was a couple of years before shea butter became “cool” and was suddenly a popular ingredient in many soaps and cosmetic products. The process that shea butter is harvested is almost as wonderful as the butter itself. Here’s more information about shea butter, how it comes to us, and what qualities it imparts to soap.
